Ash Williams y su novia Linda deciden pasar un fin de semana en una cabaña abandonada en el bosque. En la cabaña encuentran un magnetofón y escuchan la voz de un profesor de arqueología que recita pasajes del Necronomicón Ex Mortis o Libro de los Muertos. Las palabras de la grabación despiertan a un antiguo espíritu del mal, que posee a Linda. Ash, en defensa propia, se ve obligado a decapitar a su novia y posteriormente a mutilarse con una motosierra cuando su mano es también poseída por el espíritu. La hija del profesor, Annie, regresa de la excavación con más páginas del Necronomicón. Junto a otro compañero y una pareja de guías se dirigen a la casa donde toman al desquiciado Ash por un asesino.

Ash Williams and his girlfriend Linda decide to spend a weekend in an abandoned cabin in the woods. In the cabin they find a tape recorder and hear the voice of an archaeology professor reciting passages from the Necronomicon Ex Mortis or Book of the Dead. The words of the recording awaken an ancient evil spirit, which possesses Linda. Ash, in self-defense, is forced to decapitate his girlfriend and subsequently mutilate himself with a chainsaw when his hand is also possessed by the spirit. The professor's daughter, Annie, returns from the dig with more pages of the Necronomicon. Along with another colleague and a couple of guides they head to the house where they take the deranged Ash for a murderer.
